Centered on Epson's recommended Claria dye-based inks, the PX820FWD is first of all a photo printer. Even so, it looks like a photo printer dressed up in a business suit, since it includes lots of office-friendly features like standalone faxing and photocopying, that comes with an ADF (Auto Document Feeder) for multi-page documents.

Additionally, there is an auto duplex device tacked on to the rear for convenient double-sided document printing, and the printer is well connected with USB, Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi integrated. A dual-input cassette slots in to the bottom of the machine. The primary tray supports A4 paper while a supplementary tray can be adjusted for 6x4-inch, 7x5-inch and also 16:9 wide format photo papers. Control is refined, thanks to a particularly intuitive 19.cm 'smart-navigation' touch-panel.

Suffice it to say that standalone photocopying, faxing and direct photograph printing from CompactFlash, MS Pro, SD or xD cards is as easy as can be. The ADF also results in simple faxing or photocopying of multi-page documents, although it is possible to still bypass this and position pictures intended for scanning or copying directly on to the scanner's platen.

Print speeds are respectable instead of stunning, at least in Best quality function. In the assessments, the PX820FWD averaged 2 minutes 55 seconds with respect to borderless A4 prints plus 57 seconds per 6x4-inch print. Having said that, the very first postcard sized print needs a little longer, since the motorised tray needs to engage before printing can commence. Printing is a great deal faster on normal Photo quality setting, at 1 minute 4 seconds for A4 along with 15 seconds for every 6x4-inch print.

There is almost no perceptible distinction in quality between Photo and Best settings, though on a small number of prints we noticed very marginally more fine detail in extreme lowlights when using the highest quality setting.

Scan times are fairly speedy, at 15 seconds for a whole A4 scan along with 7 seconds to get a 6x4-inch picture, both measured at 300dpi.
The combination of cyan, magenta, yellow and black Epson Stylus Photo PX820FWD ink cartridges, plus light cyan and light magenta, allow a substantial range along with outstanding dynamic range.

When it came to colour rendition reds in the examination chart were substantially darker than envisioned. Fine lines as well as difficult diagonals along with concentric circles from the examination chart ended up being faithfully duplicated and every one of the blocks within the greyscale bar were plainly distinguishable. Landscape pictures looked their finest on the printer's Vivid colour mode, or while using the automatic Photo Enhance option, the two of which gave punchier (and virtually identical) end results. Skin colours while using the standard colour choice ended up slightly muddy whereas the Photo Enhance 'People' alternative brightened up flesh tones to give more satisfying final results.

Scanning turned out to be accurate in our tests, with fine tonal range as well as colour performance.

There's no question that the PX820FWD is rather costly for an A4 printer, and working costs are higher than average also. Wi-Fi connectivity is great to get, in particular if you want to print pictures out of your laptop, from anywhere around the home, however the auto duplex device, auto document feeder as well as standalone fax capability meet the needs of office work that most people do not demand from a photo model. Even though the PX820FWD is reasonably quick it's pricey and picture quality is not any better than average.
