Could there really be a requirement for a mono laser which retails for as much as £339? Canon unquestionably hopes so, and the Canon i-SENSYS LBP3370 hopes to attract potential buyers away from showy yet less business-oriented colour models.

That it has an extremely considerable price tag won't be instantly evident from the LBP3370's facade. There's a mono LCD but otherwise, hardly any indication of sophistication. The covering is not notably shiny or in some other way suggestive of the cost. This is not actually unexpected, because the LBP3370 is actually targeted very much at an office environment and, therefore, has to present little with respect to style.

Precisely what the LBP3370 needs to offer users is functionality, and here the results are more pleasing. It comes with a 10Base-T/100Base-TX interface plus some fantastic management software, permitting it to slide seamlessly into virtually any office network. No wireless connection is included however, to tell the truth, we are still far from the period when the common company workhorse bothers with the somewhat inconsistent Wi-Fi and Bluetooth standards.

PCL5e/6 support along with 64MB of RAM are included, while the paper inputs extend to a 250 sheet cassette along with a 50-sheet multi-purpose tray. The output happens to be a mere 125 pages. These figures might not appear really exceptional, however you may upgrade the input capability to 550 sheets through an optional tray. We would, however, like the output to be somewhat greater on a model which actually needs to be well suited for significant print-jobs. In a way however, that may well be missing the purpose of the LBP3370.

The LBP3370 was in fact printing inside of six seconds plus, when it had been in recent action, it commenced working almost immediately. It still does not quite reach the figure of 26ppm cited by Canon but at 22.2ppm (pages per minute) it's a lot closer to the on-paper figure than is usually the actual situation. Plus in a workplace setting, where there is a continuous deluge of users wanting to run off brief print jobs as fast as possible, the LBP3370's non-existent warm-up time might prove really beneficial.

The arising prints using the Canon i-SENSYS LBP3370 printer toner cartridges are dark and also razor-sharp, with the text fully defined. When compared with less costly mono lasers the print quality is considerably greater. As a mono unit, you are probably not going to be buying it mainly for the graphics use, though it is quite good here as well, bringing out the detail even in our selection of intricate picture trials.

The Canon has a built-in duplex feature, and this means that you will be able to get it to routinely print on to each side of the paper. The requirement to pull the paper back within ahead of working on the second side clearly increases the time frame (even though it fortunately will not lead to increased paper crinkling), and we found that a normal text task dropped from 22.2ppm to 11.5ppm. Nevertheless, this really is still fairly rapid, and will certainly be a really useful method of cutting down on print costs.

And so, the Canon i-SENSYS LBP3370 includes some good features which will help to make it a great addition to a fast paced workplace, and it blends strong (however , not world-beating) operation with clear print quality. The purchase price, however, remains something of a problem for us. This particular model is more than £300, and you can buy a fine colour laser for this money. The running overheads are certainly respectable, and where there is a requirement for strong black and white prints, this'll be an inexpensive and also productive selection. However at a period when the cost of mono models is in freefall, we aren't certain that the LBP3370 is really outstanding enough to warrant that steep selling price.
